Hey all!

I hope your writing is going well and you're kicking your goal's butt! Remember, all goals are good goals, and also if you get partway through the month and realize you overshot, YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR GOAL! That is totally within the scope of FerUnWriMo, so don't be afraid to alter that goal to suit your needs.

(Also applies if you streak past your goal within no time at all and want to further challenge yourself--crank it up!)

As FerUnWriMo is compatible with all other writing challenges (unless they specifically name us as bad, I guess, though I'm not sure why that would happen???), sometimes I'll post about other ones I'm participating in that I think might interest y'all.

Do you have a challenge you think might interest others? Feel free to make a post about it! Just use the "other challenges" tag so we can find them all easily.

On that note, today I want to tell you about The Rough Draft Challenge!

The Rough Draft Challenge & Diaries

Some of you may have heard of Sarra Cannon. If you haven't, she's an indie author who's also created an entire community called Heart Breathings -- it's mainly geared towards writers, but there are non-writer types in it as well. She has a Heart Breathings Writing Community FB group, a Youtube channel, a newsletter, and a Discord.

Every year for Nanowrimo she would do daily Vlogs called the Nanowrimo Diaries. She's now changed the name to the Rough Draft Diaries AND she's launching her own challenge called The Rough Draft Challenge.

She talks about it in this video, which I recommend watching to get it right from her!

The TL;DW version (aka I'm paraphrasing what I remember from the video, so there may be errors):
  • The Rough Draft Challenge will be in November and probably a few other months in the year, maybe March, but she hasn't made a final decision there yet.
  • There will be a few different levels to the challenge: 10K, 25K, 50K, 100K
  • She'll be sending out some sort of winner goodies to the winners of each level.
  • If you don't make the goal you set out for but you did make a lower tier (like if you tried for 25K and only wrote 12K), you'll be considered a 'winner' at the tier you did make.
  • There will be a website with word count tracking! It's not up yet but it's being built now.
  • She hasn't named the different word count tiers yet so if you have ideas as to what to name them, go comment on the YT video.

I will be joining this November and likely aiming for 50K.

I created FerUnWriMo to be as loose and self-directed as possible, because a) I just wanted a chill, month-to-month challenge to motivate me where I could set my own goals, and b) I had no desire to do any of the admin that would come with setting "official challenge goals" like with Nano or even GYWO when other people joined. Also I would be terrible at doing admin, as evidenced by how long it takes me to reply to COMMENTS, ffs.

That said, I do LOVE joining an unhinged challenge with an externally-set goal I need to try to wrestle to the ground, teeth bared and growling, so I am VERY EXCITE that Sarra has done this! Because I was going to challenge myself to 50K in November ANYWAY, but now I can do it as part of not only FerUnWriMo but the Rough Draft Challenge as well.

YAY, more challenges! My magpie brain is happy, gathering them like shiny things.

Anyway, if you want to join the Rough Draft Challenge, go subscribe to Sarra's Youtube or her newsletter (links are in the video description), or join the FB group.

(If you join the newsletter she'll be sending out her Preptober workbook before the beginning of October & I find it useful for prepping my books.)
